Tour AlpeAdria

Dear friends,

we start this wonderful tour in Salzburg-Anif, pass the "Rossfeldstrasse" with the "great dictators" documentation center, turn along the salt mine road with it's most famous , 4000 year old salt mines like Dürnstein and Hallstatt and arrive Bad Aussee in the early afternoon. Time enough to drive up the "Loser Alpenstrasse" with an tremendous panorama to the Dachstein glacier.

In Bad Aussee , the real home of the famous " Austrian Lederhose "we'll feel the spirit of the former Habsburgian Archduke Erzherzog Johann, who influenced the austrian history and culture strongly. We'll have a very traditional alpin dinner here, let you surprise.......
Thanks to the technical ambitions of these visionary man we are able to cross the "Sölkpass" next day, a former roman trade road to "Germania" and the northern provinces , surounded and protected by the famous LIMES, the northern border of the roman empire.
Crossing the mystic mountains of the "Niedere Tauern", the eastern part of the alps we enter Carinthia, Austrias, southern province , and arrive in the afternoon Kranska Gora , the famous slovenian alp village in the Julian Alps.

The third day we cross the Hvrisic - Pass , entering the Isonzo valley ( in Slovenija it's called Soca ), probably one of the most pittoresque alp rivers with it's smaragd green water . In one of the branches of this river where during the world war I all in all 13 terrible battles happened between the Austrian / German and Italian troups , we stop in Idrija.  For more than 500 years it was the worlds second largest mercury mine with a spectacular mine museum. Did you know that the Spanish Habsburgs shipped these high quality mercury to their south american gold and silvermines in Peru and Bolivia for purifying their precious metals ( or that of the indios ).

The 4th day we enter the unknown Slovenian wine area with it's pittoresque villages and reach after crossing the Karst Mountains ( with it's huge stalactite caves) Lipizza , the home of the world famous white horses, later on the stars of the Spanish Riding School in Viennas Imperial residence.

Only a few kilometers later we arrive Triest, in the Habsburgs periode the most important harbour of the Austrian Hungarian monarchy. Very close, facing the norman Castle of Miramare, we check in our seaside hotel.

Good time for a jump into the adriatic sea , a Campari Orange and the nightly skyline of Triest.

This normanic styled castle was owned by the Habsburgian Archduke Maximilian who started from here with his ship "Novara" to mexico, being sure , supported by the french imperator Napoleon III , to be crowned as Mexican Imparator. Unfortunately the mexican revolutionists during the civil war had other plans and so he got shot by a firing squad in 1867 in the age of 34. Bad Luck !

We step over from Miramare to Duino , the summer residence of a very rich german countess who invited the poetical shooting star of this time, R.M. Rilke ( just for poetry !!) summer for summer and so he wrote here, without any financial troubles which poets normally like to have, his famous "Duine Elegies" . Good luck !

The fifth day we swing through the gentle hills of the "Sette Colli", one of the most exiting wine areas of northern Italy on the west side of the italian / slovenian border , but crossing over as well to the slovenian neighbours. More quired , more natural and more funny for biking. Going northwards some kilometers along the Isonzo river we turn again westward and cross the absolutely unknown "Kolovrat Mountains" where you still can see  fortifications of the first world war.
Following the old, but good conditioned  military roads ( without trucks and tourists ) we cross over from the slovenian Isonzo valley to the italian Natisone valley and reach after a lonesome ride through oak and chestnut forests Cividale. The former capital of these region in the past was named by his founder , the great Julius Caesar . Forum Iuli .

This historic town in the past was very often "visited" by eastern invasors like the goths and langobards who settled down here after heavy fights against the romans. Famous for the dizzying "devils bridge" over the Natisone river. We'll take accomodation here after visiting one of the most exciting wineries of the Friuli , owned by the Sovereign Maltese order of knghts, absolutely specialists in producing some extraordinary red wines.

They promised us a fantastic wine degustation for this evening amidst an impressive scenery. So let's do it !

The sixth day is coming , we say good by to Julius Caesar and turn along the friulian "Strada di Castello" , passing some spectacular places in the Julian Alps and enter  Austrias Carinthia with it's colourful lakes and soft mountains.

Depending on the weather we choose some interesting destinations on the way back to Salzburg, such like the famous car museum of Ferdinand Porsche in Gmünd and arrive Salzburg early enough for a nice dinner at "Husarenwirt".

Here, in this very traditional pub it's time for reflection and a good glass of beer.
